~I am happy with the Etude’s bass. It has proper punch and slam when needed, and provides a solid base for the music.
~It’s maybe not the quickest bass ever, but it can keep up with the music, and while it is a thicker, warmer bass, it doesn’t seem to intrude on the midrange too much.
~The note textures and details in the bass are also highlights of the Etude’s bass. It sounds powerful and authoritative and should please all but the more serious bass-heads.
~The emphasis is slightly toward mid-bass slam than sub-bass rumble, but the latter is still deep; just not elevated very much.
Mids and Vocals: 4/5: Rich and lively, but it has its limits.
~Yes, the midrange is slightly colored by the rich mid-bass, but still manages to remain clean enough for almost all genres. Intense metal music though, sounds dense and almost congested, which is not great. I don’t normally listen to music that intense, so I like the midrange for the most part, but if hard rock or metal are staples in your library, this rating would go down to probably a below average score. The Etude just isn’t quite capable of keeping up instrument separation on very intense passages, and I suspect it’s due to the KVT driver. If you like a richer, smoother sound no matter what genre you’re listening to, then you’ll love the Etude regardless.
~Vocals are full and emotional, and never sound thin, harsh, or sibilant, even on songs with very bad sibilance.
~Despite my complaining about instrument separation under audio duress, with most genres, the midrange is very good, crisp, with very well-defined note textures, without losing the musicality from the mid-bass warmth. It’s a magic blend of musicality and incisive detail that is actually really amazing. Hence my score averaged out here at very good [4/5].
Treble: 4/5: Detailed and capable, but not always natural.
~I was worried about the treble of the Etude being too rolled-off or safe. My worries were unfounded. The Etude is quite capable in the treble details, but it's definitely not clinical.
~Note edges are crisp and detailed, just how I like it, but not sharp or piercing. A perfect balance!
~Compared to some other IEMs, the Etude has a colored sound, and that means sometimes the treble doesn’t sound totally natural. It sounds good, in almost all cases, but it’s probably the best option for monitoring. It’s for relaxing and immersing yourself in the music, and ultimately, my gripe about tonality is mostly a minor issue.
Soundstage: 4/5: Deep and broad.
~Maybe not the most orbital soundstage ever, but the Etude certainly immerses you in music, and the stage is tall and open.
CONCLUSION
The Kiwi Ears Etude is a set full of surprises. It has engaging textures, deep power, and pleasing tuning. The BC driver seems to endow the Etude with richness and soundstage effects, similar to the Fan 3S, KB02, and even the Jomo Nautilus, although that set has a very different sound.
The Etude seems well-priced, and knows its place, yet provides good value for those wanting a unique, exciting sonic experience. It’s not the most accurate, not the most detailed, not “audiophile correct,” but it’s certainly an amazing IEM.
